U1 - Protein Control Of Cell Division Flashcards
What is the cytoskeleton
The cytoskeleton gives mechanical support and shape to cells. E.g. microtubules
What are microtubules
Microtubules are hollow cyclometer composed of the protein Tubulin.
Where do microtubules come from?
Microtubules come from the mircrotubule organising centre MTOC or centrosome
What do mircrotubules do?
They control the movement of memebrane bound organelles and chromosomes. They form spindle fibres that are active during cell division
Cell division requires remodelling of the cytoskeleton
-
What techniques are used in the formation of microtubules
Polymerisation involves the formation of microtubules so they can grow in length
Depolymerisation allows the microtubules to condense
What role do the microtubules perform on the cell division
They have spindle fibres that attach and separate the chromatids
