U1 BIOCHEMISTRY: Hydrocarbons & Functional Groups Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons made up of?
Made of carbons with hydrogens coming off of them.
What is the general formula of hydrocarbons?
CnH(2n+2)
Methane is?
CH4
Ethane is?
C2H6
Propane is?
C3H8
Butane is?
C4H16
How is butane and any “ane” greater than 4 different than the first three “anes”?
Because they can have isomers
What are functional groups?
An addition of molecules to create groups with similar characteristic.
What are Hydroxyls?
Alcohols (-OH)
What are Amines?
(-NH2)
What are Carboxyl?
Acids (-COOH)
What are the two types of Carbonyl?
- Aldehyde (-COOH) “al” at the end like mathanAL
2. Ketone (-COO) “one” at end
What reaction happens in order to get linkages?
Condensation reactions of de-H2O synthesis, which is removing H2O to build a molecule
What kind of linkages can there be?
Ether, Ester, Amide and Peptide
Ether is?
Linkage between two hydroxyls (-OH) + (HO-) = H20+O
