U2 Test Part 2: Photosythesis Flashcards
Location of chloroplasts
found in photosynthetic tissues
What are granna
the stacks of thylakoids embedded in the stroma of a chloroplast.
Where does CO2 take place in photosythesis?
Plants take in carbon dioxide and water at the start of photosythesis
What is transpiration? How is water lost during transpiration?
“The evaporation of water from plant occurring at the leaves”
Basically, when plant absorb too much water from soil it sends the water to the leaves where it can be evaporated.
Characteristics of light rxn:
- Must have light
- Takes place in the thylakoid membranes
- Uses light energy to make ATP and NADPH
Calvin Cycle
- process that plants and algae use to turn carbon dioxide from the air into sugar
- four main steps: carbon fixation, reduction phase, carbohydrate formation, and regeneration phase (not sure if we need to know this part)
Photophosphorylation
conversion of ADP to ATP using the energy of sunlight by activation of PSII
PSII: Photosystem II is the first protein complex in the light-dependent reactions
Water photolysis
occurs in the granum of a chloroplast where light is absorbed by chlorophyll
Photolysis of water occurs in the thylakoids
What is the equation for Photolysis of water?
H20 -> 2H^+ +2e^- + 1/2 O2
If C3 uses RuDP, what does C4 use
C4 uses PEP (for the gainz)
What does C4 refer to other than pre-workout?
the Hatch-Slack pathway (we don’t slack when we on C4)
What is the cost of C4? (not the amazon price)
ATP must be used
Difference between Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b?
chlorophyll A is the principal pigment involved in the photosynthesis
whereas chlorophyll B is the accessory pigment
Difference between photosystem I and photosystem II
PSI: P700
PSII: P680
Compare the light and dark reaction
Light:
- Needs light
- Produces ATP and NADPH
Dark:
- Does not need light
- Produces the glucose plants needs by using the ATP and NADH that the light reaction produces
