U1: Areas of Research Flashcards
Cryptography
- Sender takes regular message, encrypts it, then sends to receiver
- Receiver decrypts message with code shared by sender and receiver
Caesar Cipher/Shift
- Shifting the letters of a message by a no. of spots in the alphabet.
- Possible to crack with frequency analysis.
Frequency Analysis
Investigating no. of occurrences of letters in a language
Parallel Processing/Parallelization [A]
- Multiple processor cores work on the same task simultaneously.
- Processing shared between cores
Parallel Processing/Parallelization [B]
- Always occurs when processors have +1 core.
- OS manages tasks cores perform, then combines results together
Distributed Computing
- Similar to parallelization
- Cores and processors are in separate computers communicating over network
Research from Distributed Computing
Researcher can set website allowing people across world to allow computers to help process tasks, speeding up completion.
Data Mining
Analyzing large amounts of data to draw conclusions or predict future outcomes.
Steps of Data Mining
- Data gathering, preparation and organization to improve chances of finding patterns
- Model building and evaluation → the application of model techniques for analysis
Association
- Pattern is deciphered from relationships between items in same transaction
- Ex: retailer might identify customer always buying cream when buying chocolates
Classification
Companies build software that learns how to classify data items into groups
Clustering
Different objects with similar characteristics are grouped together
Prediction
- Data mining technique used w/ others
- Involving trend analysis, classification, pattern matching and relation.
- Used to predict future event
Decision Trees
- Starts w/ question having multiple answers
- Each leads to further question for data to be categorized, or so prediction can be made
Big Data
Large amounts of data held at disposal
