-August- Clifford killed and 200 English troops lost

Events of battle of Kinsale
-September- Spanish fleet- 28 warships- occupied the Irish port of
Kinsale with 3,300 men
-Under O’Neill and O’Donnell 6,000 men marched south from Ulster - English, under President of Munster, George Carew, and new Lord Deputy, Lord Mountjoy, reacted quickly + laid siege to Kinsale- 12,000 men
-The two armies clashed in December, resulting in a decisive English victory

-O’Donnell fled to Spain, seeking further help from King Phillip III while O’Neill retreated to Ulster.
-The Spanish capitulated in 1602 and were allowed to retreat.
