typography (origin)
derives from the art of book printing; relates closely to the manual actions associated with printing (originally, the printer/typesetter would put together the individual letters (“types”) to create words, lines, whole texts. the letters would be made from lead or wood (larger letters))
typography
“the creation of designs using scripts.” may relate only to text part of layout, or to the whole of a design process (script in combo with images, lines, colors, surfaces). a means of giving logical structure to the visual relationships between the layout’s letters, words, and symbols (its textual building blocks/hierarchies)
microtypography
choosing the shape of the letters, and the way they are organized creatively, fitting them together to create words, lines, paragraphs
macrotypography
formatting, shaping, and ordering the textual structure in an area
script design
the realization (technical and design) of script characters themselves, and the development of new scripts (type, fonts, font families)
