List the primary effects:
6500 killed, drowned by 5 metre storm surge, 90% of the city of Tacloban destroyed, 600,000 displaced, 40,000 homes destroyed, Tacloban airport terminal damaged, 30,000 fishing boats destroyed, power lines brought down by winds, crops destroyed, flooding as a result of the 400 mm of rainfall
List the secondary effects:
14 million affected, 6 million lost source of income, flooding caused landslides, roads blocked (cut off aid to isolated communities), some had no electricity for over a month, ferry services and flights disrupted, shortages of fresh water, food and shelter, outbreak of disease, jobs lost, hospitals damaged, shops and schools destroyed, affected livelihood and education, looting and violence in Tacloban
List the short term responses:
US aircraft carrier George Washington sent SAR helicopters and delivered aid, 1200 evacuation centres set up for the homeless, UK gov. sent shelter kits, French, Belgian and Israeli gov. set up field hospitals to help the injured, Philippines Red Cross delivered food aid
List the long term responses:
Cash for work programmes (people paid to help clear debris and rebuild Tacloban), aid agencies (Oxfam) supported the replacement of fishing boats (vital source of income), cyclone shelters built in coastal areas, thousands of new homes built away from coast, rebuilding of roads, bridges, airport facilities, schools and homes
