Group of 7000 islands in the South China, in Southeast Asia
What is the Philippines population?
Vulnerable population of 98 million, including 11 million densely populated co in the coastal LT situated mega dirt of Manila (the capital)

$3000 pear year (means spending money on mitigation and adaptation is limited)
What natural hazards does the Philippines experience?
Geophysical (volcanic eruptions, landslides earthquakes and tsunamis) and hydro-meteorological (typhoons, floods, droughts and landslides)
Explain the hazard of Earthquakes in the Philippines:
Philippines and Eurasian plate can become locked together as the Philippine plate is subducted, pressure has created many faults in which earthquakes occur, 1999 Luzon Island earthquake measured 7.8 on Richter scale and killed over 1500 people, between 1900 and 2011 a total of 22 deadly earthquakes occurred killing over 9,500 and causing $230 million in damage
Explain the hazard of volcanic eruptions in the Philippines:
Since 1900 there have been 22 deadly volcanic eruptions, largest recent eruption in 1991 was Mt Pinatubo, killed 500 and led to a global atmospheric cooling and impacting hemispheric crop production, cost of eruption damage since 1900 has been over $2.3 billion

Typhoon Haiyan case study, 257 storm events since 1900 during tropic storm season, total cost of damage is over $6”5 billion, on average they experience 7-10 events each year, Haiyan had the highest ever recorded wind speed
Explain the hazard of tsunami’s in the Philippines:
Submarine earthquakes have triggered tsunamis, tsunami that hit Mindanao in 1976 was 4-5m high storm surge and damaged 14 buildings
Explain the hazard of landslides in the Philippines:
Heavy rain leads to landslides which have killed hundreds since 1900, clean up from landslides takes a very long time to do
Explain the hazard of flooding in the Philippines:
Coastal and river flooding is common (over 150 events since 1900), these displace hundreds of thousands of people
What is the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council?
Established in 2009, NGO, civil society, responsible for ensuring the protection and welfare of the people during disaster, the national disaster risk reduction and management Act of 2010, a legislation that shifted the government focus from emergency relief to disaster risk reduction and prevention, they formulated a national disaster risk management (DEM) plan to implement the requirements set out by this legislation
What did they do in 2018?
They published a comprehensive hazard risk management handbook and distributed it widely, the issue is that many of the population lack the funds ro prepare effectively
What have they agreed as an LIC?
Several agreed partnerships to help with hazard response and risk reductions, these include the RC, federal agricultural organisations, ActionAid, the Asian development bank and Australian Aid, of these the RC takes responsibility for the distribution of humanitarian aid following natural disasters

this is a software that calculates the percent chance of rain (PCOR) or probability of rain using infrared and water vapor satellite image data, and Doppler Radar data in combination with statistical evaluation of historical rainfall
What does the nationwide operational assessment of Hazards (NOAH), outline?
is a service that aims to increase awareness for disaster risk and involves preparedness and reducing the catastrophic impacts of extreme hazard events

advocates the use of standard multi-scale base maps that serve as tools for strategic planning, decision making, situational analysis and other common requirements
