When and where did Haiyan form?
Formed in the South Pacific ocean, close to Micronesia, on 2 November 2013.
What were the wind speeds when it reached land?
Over 300km/h.
Where was most of the damage and what damage was reported?
Most damage was on the islands of Samar and Leyte, and there was reported flooding all over the Phillipines.
What were the social impacts of Haiyan?
estimated 6000 people killed, significant loss of power, many homes destroyed and 600,000 displaced from their homes.
What were the enviromental impacts of Haiyan?
Mangroves damaged, trees uprooted, oil spills from a tanker caused sea pollution.
What were the economic impacts of Haiyan?
$2 billion, damage to infrastructure blocked transport across islands, making it more expensive and harder to provide aid.
What were the individual, organisation and government responses to Haiyan?
Individual - people in countries such as the UK and Canada gave money towards relief effort.
Organisation - The World Health organisation coordinated the response to help the Philippine government meet the need for healthcare services.
Government - The Philippines were put int a ‘state of national calamity’ to direct funds to support the relief, in forms of of loans and grants provided by countries such as the UK.
