The Uk's Climate 2.4a, 2.4b, 2.4c. Flashcards
When was the Medieval Warm period and what happened?
950-1100. - higher temps created greater crop yields and a growing population due to increased solar radiation.
When was the Little Ice Age and what happened?
1600-1685. - temps were low enough to freeze the Thames due to increased volcanic activity and decreased solar radiation.
What is the UK’s climate?
temperate, wet climate + frontal rainfall.
How does maritime influence impact the UK’s climate?
most air that reaches the UK contains lots of moisture as it is surrounded by sea, leading to rainfall all year.
How does the North Atlantic Drift impact the UK’s climate?
Ocean current that brings warm water North to the UK. Makes the climate milder in winter than would be expected.
How does the Prevailing wind impact the UK’s climate?
The main wind for the UK comes from the South-West. It travels over the Atlantic Ocean and brings moisture that leads to more rainfall.
How does Atmospheric circulation impact the UK’s climate?
The Uk is near the boundary between the Ferrel and Polar cells. Warmer air from the South and cooler air from the North meet which causes unsettled weather.
How does altitude impact the UK’s climate?
The higher an area is the cooler and wetter it is - areas in the UK vary.
