They are regular patterns of disturbance that transfer energy from one point to another without transferring particles of matter

What does each particle in a longitudinal wave do?
A
Vibrates backwards and forwards about its normal position
Moves backwards and forwards in the same plane as the direction of wave movement.

Sound

What does each particle in a transverse wave do?
A
Vibrates up and down about its normal position
Moves up and down at right angles (90o) to the direction of wave movement
