Types Of Transmission Flashcards
What are the 9 types of transmission
Direct contact Indirect contact Inhalation Ingestion Inoculation Fomite Vectors Hands Air
How does direct contact spread disease
Via the skin, contaminated body secretions. Also stis
How does indirect contact spread disease
Intermediate carrier involved in the spread of disease e.g. sharing a towel
How does inhalation transmit disease
Exhaled by infectious person, inhaled by another e.g. influenza
How does ingestion spread disease
Organisms capable of infecting the gastrointestinal tract are ingested e.g. salmonella
How does inoculation spread disease
Follows a sharps injury and is inoculated into the blood stream
How does fomite spread disease
Infected organism contaminates object and then transmits to another person e.g. resusitaion equipment
How do vectors spread disease
An animal passively transmits pathogenic microbes e.g. common housefly
How do hands spread disease
Cross contamination by carrying microbes to other body sites and equipment
