- heritage sites & activities help reinforce national identities for domestic tourists
- promote country’s identity, culture, & history
- includes museums, traditional festivals, & national and historical monuments

- traveling to sites associated w/ death and tragedy (battlefields and monuments)
- people who take part usually : survivors, relatives, & people interested to know more about an event
- e.g. Former World Trade Center, which collapsed on September 11th, 2001 after being hit by 2 hijacked planes
- killed more than 3000 people.
