fieldwork strategies Flashcards
systematic sampling
effectiveness: - quick -easy
ineffective: -easy to miss anomalies
random sampling
effectiveness: -not biased -easy to carry out
ineffectiveness: -sampling may not be representative -difficult to obtain fair experiment (respondents skewed towards certain group)
stratified sampling
effectiveness: -overcomes missing variation problem -not biased
ineffectiveness: -human investigation (age group) -difficult to obtain background data of each group
sketching
effectiveness: -observe surroundings in details -first hand observation - reference
ineffectiveness: -time-consuming -dependent on weather
bipolar environmental assessment
effectiveness: -inexpensive -compare w/ other factors
ineffectiveness: -subjective –> individual interpretation –> unreliable & not representative of entire area
surveys/interviews
effectiveness: inexpensive -custom tailored questions
ineffectiveness: time-consuming (conducting) and tedious (collating results)
pedestrian count
effectiveness: -easy to collate data -inexpensive
ineffectiveness: -inaccurate (human error when counting) -not in-depth (results differ due to time)
photographs
effectiveness: fast and easy to analyse
ineffectiveness: tedious (analysing) and cannot evaluate exact figures
