Types Of Tectonic Activity Flashcards
Basaltic Lava
Basalt makes up most of the ocean floor and is the most common type of lava. A dark, fine-grained, igneous rock.
Ash
The powdery residue left after the burning of a substance.
Andesitic Lava
A gray, fine-grained volcanic rock.
Epicentre
The point on the earth’s surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.
Dormant Volcano
A dormant volcano is an active volcano that is not erupting, but supposed to erupt again.
Rhyolitic Lava
A fine-grained igneous rock rich in silica: the volcanic equivalent of granite.
Active Volcano
An active volcano is a volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years.
Composite Cone Volcano
A volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash.
Extinct Volcano
An extinct volcano has not had an eruption for at least 10,000 years and is not expected to erupt again in a comparable time scale of the future.
Fold Mountains
Mountains that form mainly by the effects of folding on layers within the upper part of the Earth’s crust.
Geysers
Hot springs in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air.
Hydro-Meteorological Hazards
A process or phenomenon of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and services, social and economic disruption, or environmental damage. This can includes tropical cyclones.
Jokulhlaups
A type of glacial outburst flood.
Lahar
A destructive mudflow on the slopes of a volcano.
Landslide
A collapse of a mass of earth or rock from a mountain or cliff.
