Types of structures Flashcards
SOLID STRUCTURES
Also known as “Mass Structures”
Made of only one part with no or very few hollow spaces
Often designed to provide strength and support
Examples: rock, brick, statue, playdough
FRAME STRUCTURES
Like a skeleton – made of different pieces that are all joined together
Usually a large part of the structure is hollowed out
One single piece does not support the load – all the attached pieces work together to support the load
Examples: tent, skyscraper, stapler
SHELL STRUCTURES
Combines the characteristics of solid and frame structures – hollow like a frame structure but usually just made of only one piece
Often uses a curved surface – in order to distribute forces that act on them evenly throughout the structure
Examples: igloo, egg carton, storage bin
