Types of forces Flashcards
9 Types of Forces
1) Tension
2) Compression
3) Torsion
4) Shearing
5) Gravitational
6) Friction
7) Bouyant
8) Elastic
9) Muscular
TENSION FORCES
Stretching ends apart
pulling the ends apart
A pulling force that causes a material to stretch by pullings its ends apart. This occurs with many different elastic bands and ropes.
COMPRESSION FORCES
Pushing that crushes the materal by
squeezing it together
A pushing force that crushes a material by squeezing it together. This occurs when releasing water from a sponge.
TORSION FORCES
Twisting
A type of force where materials are twisted by turning the ends in opposite directions.
SHEARING FORCES
Bending or tearing
A type of force where a material is bent or torn by pressing different parts in opposite directions at the same time. Example: A lawn mower.
GRAVITATIONAL FORCES
Two objects being pulled together
The force of attraction between two objects that causes them to be pulled together. In the case of large structures it refers to the force of gravity of earth pulling the structures close to the ground.
FRICTION FORCES
sliding
the motion of one object sliding against another
Any force that opposes the motion of one object sliding over the surface of another object. For example - rubbing your hands together.
BUOYANT FORCES
pushing up on a object ex a sailbout gets pushed up by the water/ floats
The forces caused by the upward push of a fluid on an object that is immersed in that fluid.
ELASTIC FORCES
Someone pulls or streaches a elastic then it slowly goes back to its normal shape
The force developed in matter that has been deformed that causes it to return to its original shape.
MUSCULAR FORCES
a human pushing or pulling
The force that is exerted by the muscles of a living organism.
