Mass weight and structure efficiency Flashcards
Describe MASS (3 Key points)
- Amount of material (or particles) in a substance
- Measured in kilograms (kg)
- Does not change by location
Describe WEIGHT (4 Key Points)
- The gravitational force that acts on an object
- Measured in Newtons (N)
- Strength = mass of the objects and the distance between those objects
- Can change depending on location!!!
CALCULATING YOUR ACTUAL “WEIGHT”
1kg object on earth has a gravitational force of approx. 10 N acting on it
1kg = 10N
So for 1LBS
1LBS / 2.2KG * 10N = 4.54N gravitational force
(Therefore - if you know your mass in pounds, divide that number by 2.2, then multiply the number by 10. Your answer should be expressed in Newtons!!
If you know your mass in kilograms, simply multiply that number by 10, and express your answer in Newtons)
How do you describe STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCY
A number that expresses the streagth of a structure to support a load
More efficient structures support great masses while having a low mass themselves
This can be expressed both qualitatively (using words) and quantitatively (using numbers)
