Types Of Social Influence Flashcards
Normative social influence
The social group has a set of norms which dominates the behaviour of any group a person may conform to these norms so that they can fit into the group to avoid the feeling of rejection or feeling foolish this is an emotional process rather than a cognitive one as it only leads to compliance and it is rooted from the wish to gain social approval this occurs with strangers friends and in stressful situations
Informational social influence
Informational social influence is a permanently altering cognitive process which means to internalisation of the leaves routing from the belief that the social group or the majority have more information then we do and are therefore right. This usually occurs in new situations situations of ambiguity or situations of crisis where a decision needs to be made quickly.
Evaluation NSI
+ research support Asch study- When interviewed after the study many participants said that they conform to the wrong answer because they were afraid of social disapproval if they gave the right answer when asked to write down the answers are not share them conformity dropped to 12.5% this shows that people do you have a fear of being rejected by social group therefore supporting the normative social influence approach
- A limitation of the NSI approach is that individuals are different and this definition can’t be generalised to everyone some people have a great desire for being like an affiliation Teven found that students who were in Naffiliators is more likely to conform than students that weren’t there for normative social influence applies more for some people rather than others
Evaluation ISI
+A strength is that there was research supporting ISI Todd found that people were more likely to conform if the answer was ambiguous and the difficulty of the question was high.
-A limitation of the ISO model is it’s unclear which either the NSI or the ISI is in action during research this is because one of the centre was added to ashes research conformity dropped however this could be due to the gain of social support so NSI or the gain of an alternative informational source ISI
