Types of RNA Flashcards
What are the three types of RNA?
mRNA, tRNA, rRNA
What is RNA?
Single nucleotide strand
What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic Acid
What is the difference between DNA and RNA?
DNA is missing an oxygen atom, while RNA has that oxygen atom
What are the 4 nitrogenic nucleic bases of RNA?
Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, and Uracil
What is the function of mRNA?
The mRNA’s function is to deliver a copy of the DNA code to a ribosome in order to perform the process of translation
What is the function of tRNA?
The tRNA’s function is to transfer amino acids from the cytoplasm to a ribosome, during the process of translation
What is the function of rRNA?
The rRNA’s main function is being the main components of ribosomes. The rRNA bonds with special proteins to form a ribosome
Name the building blocks (monomers) of nucleic acids
Bases, sugar, phosphate
Name the three parts of a nucleotide
Phosphate, sugar, and nitrogen bases
Name three ways that DNA and RNA differ
RNA is a single strand.
RNA has Uracil instead of Thymine as a base.
RNA has 1 more oxygen present than DNA.
Which RNA:
a) is found inside the nucleous?
b) Transports amino acids to the ribosomes?
c) Exits the nucleus and moves towards the ribosome?
d) Copies the DNA code?
e) Makes up the structure of ribosomess?
a)mRNA
b)tRNA
c)mRNA
d)mRNA
e)rRNA
What does a collection of amino acids make?
Proteins
What is the function of a ribosome?
Site of protein synthesis
Which process creates proteins?
Protein synthesis. DNA makes everything and everything has proteins
