Types of reliability Flashcards
What are the 3 types of reliability?
- External reliability
- Internal reliability
- Observer reliability
What is external reliability?
Producing the same results each time the test/ study is carried out
What is internal reliability
The consistency within a test, usually associated with questionnaires and tests
What is observer reliability?
When 2 or more observers produce the same record of their observations
What are the 3 ways of assessing reliability?
- The split half method
- The test retest method
- Inter observer (or rater) reliability
What is the split half method?
Compares a person’s performance on 2 halves of a test or questionnaire
What type of reliability does the split half method assess?
Internal reliability
What is the test retest method?
Where a test is repeated several times using the same participants
What type of reliability does the test retest method assess?
Internal reliability
What is the inter observer (or rater) reliability method?
- The observations of 2 or more observers are compared for similarity
- The observers would be trained in the use of a coding system so they can identify and are clear on exactly what they’re looking for
What type of reliability does the inter observer (or rater) reliability method assess?
External reliability
What are the 3 ways of improving reliability?
- Take multiple measurements
- Standardised procedures
- Objective measures
