Types of Rainfall Flashcards
1
Q
What are the three types of rainfall?
A
- Orographic
- Frontal
- Convectional
2
Q
What is orographic rainfall?
A
When the air is forced over the mountain, as it rises it cools and condenses and gets warmer as it descends.
3
Q
True or false: a rain shadow is formed during orographic rainfall.
A
True
4
Q
In frontal rainfall the warm air is forced to rise over cold, heavy air but over what?
A
Across latitudes
5
Q
What happens during convectional rainfall?
A
Occurs when the sun’s energy heats the surface of the Earth, causing water to evaporate to form water vapour.
As the air rises, it cools and condenses. This process of condensation forms clouds high in the atmosphere. If this process continues, rainfall will occur.
