River Nar Flashcards
What river is the River Nar a tributary of?
River Great Ouse
What rock does the river flow over?
Permeable Chalk, clay and sandstone.
Where is the River Nar located?
Low lands of West Norfolk
What are the natural threats towards the River Nar? (5) FLAAP
- Falling water table- drought
- Limited tributaries- part of a drainage basin
- Acid rain- disrupt wildlife
- Algal blooms- disrupt other plants
- Precipitation variability- increase/decrease water level
What are the human threats towards the River Nar? (5) SCANF
- Slurry- cause algal blooms
- Cattle Farming- cause slurry
- Abstraction- disrupt wildlife
- Nitrate Runoff- cause algal blooms
- Fishing- lead weights
What do these clear watered streams inhabit (7) ASKGLOW
- Atlantic salmon
- Sea trout
- Kingfishers
- Graylling
- Lamprey
- Otters
- Water voles
How has Norfolks Rivers trust protected the river? (3)
- Worked with outdoor pig unit
- Restoration pf the river
- Soil trapping- obstructing field fertiliser draining into the river.
What is the catchment area?
260 Km2
Is the base flow index high or low?
HIGH!- 0.9
Why is the base flow index high?
More water comes from the rocks that lie underneath the river, compared to the amount entering from the surface.
What percent of the catchment area is arable land?
75%
What two reasons has caused the river embankments to be damaged?
- Cattle and sheep farming
- Gravel extraction
How does intensive pig farming have an impact on the catchment area?
Large volumes of infrequent slurry enters the river, the excess of nutrients increasethe growth of algal blooms. Reducing the water quality as the other plants cannot grow as well.
Who has been working with NRT and WWF?
Coca Cola
Why is coca cola trying to recreate the river banks to be low lying instead of steep?
- Plants grow better on low lying banks
- Increases river flow, low flow can cause drought.
