types of plastic Flashcards
2 types of plastic
- thermoplastics
- thermosetting plastics
thermoplastic
*don’t change chemically when heated
*e.g; polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride
thermosetting plastics
*shaped only once when heated and solidified(chemical reaction cannot be reversed)
*epoxy, rubber, bakelite, polyester fibreglass
what are plastics produced from
crude oil and natural gases
properties of thermoplastics
*can be molded over and over again
*easy to work with
*strong and sometimes transparent
*good insulators
*low in tensile strength
thermosetting plastics
*difficult to work with
*hard and brittle
*heat resistant
*high in tensile strength
reduce
to use less (avoid making waste)
reuse
use something over and over again
recycle
make new products from old things (don’t throw everything into the trash)
