gears Flashcards
types of gears
spur | bevel | rack and pinion | worm
spur gear(most common) characteristics
*straight teeth + shaft attached parallel
*driver gear provides input movement | driven gear provides output movement
*counter-rotation
*no increase in speed between driver and driven
bevel gear characteristics
*axes intersect each other
*gear is shaped like a cone
*change direction of movement
bevel gears of equal size
equal size simply allow change to operating angle
bevel gears of unequal size
allows mechanical advantage to be changed
disadvantages of bevel gears
can only work with complementary gear/partner and no other
rack and pinion gear characteristics
*changes linear motion to circular motion(vice versa)
*(flat)rack gear whose teeth mesh with (round)pinion
worm gear characteristics
*large increases force/large decrease in speed
*made up of cylinder with spiral groove- when it rotates it causes gear to rotate as well
*worm and wheel transmit movement between shafts at (90°)
what do idler gears do
in between 2 gears changes direction of movement(ensuring that both gears rotate in the same direction)
4 functions of gears
- change direction of movement
- change direction of rotation
- change type of movement
- increase speed/decrease force
