Types Of Oil Rigs Flashcards
Fixed Platforms
Consist of a steel or concrete structure anchored directly onto the seabed. Ideal for shallow waters (up to about 500 feet)
Complex
A series of fixed platforms that are bridge linked.
Jack up
Mobile, self-elevating rigs with legs that can be lowered to the seabed, providing a stable drilling environment in shallow waters (up to 400 feet).
Semi-Sub
Floating rigs that are partially submerged in water and held in position by mooring lines or dynamic positioning. Suitable for deeper waters and harsher environments.
Drillships
Ships equipped with drilling apparatus. They are mobile, can drill in ultra-deep waters, and are preferred in exploratory drilling.
SPAR
Floating platforms anchored to the seabed with a large cylindrical hull. They are stable in deep water and can support both drilling and production operations.
Tension leg platforms
Floating platforms tethered to the seabed by tensioned legs, providing stability suitable for deep-water drilling and production.
FPSOs
Ships that process and store oil before offloading it to tankers. Ideal for remote areas where pipeline infrastructure is not feasible.
FLNG (Floating liquified natural gas)
Floating facilities designed for the on-site production and liquefaction of natural gas.
Compliant Towers
Narrow, flexible towers and a piled foundation to support a conventional deck for drilling and production. Used in waters up to 3,000 feet.
