types of ltm Flashcards
who suggested that the MSM view of LTM was too simplistic?
Tulving (1985)
what is episodic memory?
a long term memory store for personal events. it is declarative and time stamped.
example of episodic memory
remembering your birthday parties
what is semantic memory?
a memory store for our knowledge of the world. it is declarative and not time stamped.
example of semantic memory
the definitions of words
what is procedural memory
a memory store for our knowledge of how to do things. it is non-declarative and not time stamped.
example of procedural memory
memory of how to drive a car
+AO3 - clive wearing
suffered severe memory loss after contracting an infection. he remembered how to walk, talk, read and play music, etc. but could not remember his children’s names. He had a very reduced memory of personal events and general knowledge. Supports the idea of different LTMs, as his procedural memory was intact but his episodic and semantic were damaged.
-AO3 - CA low control
injuries suffered were not expected, researcher had no way of controlling what happened before or during the injury, do not know how their memory was before injuries. lack of control limits how much evidence clinical studies can provide.
-AO3 - conflicting findings
Tulving linked the left prefrontal cortex with episodic memory and the right with semantic memory, while other researchers have linked the left with semantic and right with episodic. challenges any neurophysiological evidence to support types of memory as there is poor agreement on locations.
+AO3 - RWA
as people age they experience memory loss, but research has shown this to be specific to episodic memory. Therefore, a method was developed to improve episodic memory in older people. trained ppts performed better on an episodic memory test. distinguishing between different LTMs enables specific treatments to be developed.
