msm Flashcards
what is the multi-store memory model (MSM)?
a representation of how memory works in terms of memory stores and how information is passed between them
what does the MSM look like?
stimulus from environment, sensory register, STM, LTM
what is the sensory register?
the memory store for each of our 5 senses.
how is the SR coded?
modality specific (visual information - iconic, acoustic information - echoic)
what is the capacity of the SR?
extremely high, millions of receptors each storing data
what is the duration of the SR?
very brief, less than half a second
what is the key process between the SR and STM?
attention
how is information kept in STM?
maintenance rehearsal
how is information transferred from STM to LTM?
prolonged rehearsal
how is information transferred from LTM to STM?
retrieval
+AO3 - Baddeley
we mix up acoustically similar words when using STM, mix up semantically similar words when using LTM, shows that STM and LTM are separate memory stores, supports MSM.
-AO3 - CA artifical stimuli
in everyday life we form memories related to useful things, such as names, places, etc. many studies that support the MSM use artificial stimuli, which may not reflect memory. may not be a valid model of memory in everyday life.
-AO3 - Shallice and Warrington (KF)
KF - had amnesia, STM was very poor for digits when they were read out loud, but his recall was much better when he read them himself. Suggests there is more than one STM store, MSM may be too simplified.
-AO3 - elaborative rehearsal
MSM states that more rehearsal means more likely to transfer to the LTM. But research suggests that elaborative rehearsal (when you link information to existing knowledge) is needed to transfer information to the LTM. suggests MSM does not fully explain how LTM is achieved.
