Types Of LTM Flashcards
2 types of log term memory
- explicit (conscious)
- implicit (unconscious)
Types of explicit memory
- episodic
- semantic
Types of implicit memory
Procedural
What is episodic memory
- a record of events that happened to us
- includes info about when and where
What is semantic memory
- All the knowledge we have learned
- when we gain knowledge about the world from our own experiences
- episodic memories can lead to semantic memories
What is procedural memory
Memory for how to perform learned tasks or actions
Research support for procedural LTM
Milner
- HM could show improvement on a task with practice (procedural LTM) yet had no memory of having practised he task (episodic LTM)
- support separate procedural and episodic memory in different brain locations since brain damage had not impaired his procedural memory
Supporting research for separate episodic and semantic LTM
Tulving
• Found consistent differences in cortical blood flow patterns between semantic and episodic memory retrieval. There was greater activation of the frontal lobes for episodic memories and more posterior regions of the cortex for semantic memories.
Evolution of types of LTM - criticisms
Lacks population validity - single case study’s or small samples may not tell us how memory works in the general population
• Semantic and episodic memory may differ due to different types of thinking and emotion. Episodic memories are associated with conscious awareness and emotional feelings linked to them whereas semantic memories are associated with objective analysis.
