Cogitive Interviews Flashcards
Who developed cognitive interview techniques
Fisher and geiselman
Main 4 techniques used
- changing the narrative order
- changing perspective
- mentally recreating the context of the original incident
- reporting everything
What is changing the narrative order
Asking the witness to recount their experience in a different chronological order
What is changing perspective
Asking the witness to describe things from another viewpoint
What is mentally recreating the context of the original incident
Ask the witness to remember the environmental context eg weather, feelings at the crime scene
What is reporting everything
Ask the witness to recall everything even if it seems to have little relevance or they are not sure about it
Other guidelines ad interviewer must follow when interviewing a witness
- interviewer not distracting the witness with unnecessary interruptions/ questions
- witness controlling flow of information
- asking open needed questions
- witness being reminded not to guess and thats its fine to say i don’t know
Supporting research
Fisher et al
- found that after training in the use of CI detectives in Florida game up to 47% more info when it’s ring witnesses to real crimes compared with their performance before training
- shows effectiveness of CI
Weakness of CI
- Composed of several different strategies, difficult to know whether all or just some of these strategies are responsible for the improvement in accuracy of recall
-konken et al suggests that there may be tendency’s for CI to increase both correct and incorrect details and encourage confabulation ( making up info that fits with the schema of events)
