Episodic
Semantic
Procedural
What is explicit memory?
Information that you have to consciously work to remember
What is implicit memory?
Information that you remember unconsciously and effortlessly
What is episodic memory?
This is the ability to recall events from our lives. It is a type of explicit memory which includes personal experiences.
These memories are timestamp so you remember exactly when it happened.
The strength of the memory is determined by the strength of emotions experienced at the time.
You need to make a conscious effort to recall these memories.
What is semantic memory?
Another type of explicit memory, including our knowledge of the world and facts and concepts and meaning.
These memories are not time stamped and it’s unlikely that you will know when you first learned them.
What is procedural memory?
A type of implicit memory including the memory of performed tasks or skills e.g. writing and reading. We can do this without conscious awareness.
These memories are often acquired through repetition and practice and often formed in early life.
What is the positive evaluation of the different types of long-term memory?
Case study of CW- will class musicians suffered from amnesia and could still play the piano brilliantly suggesting his procedural memory still intact. he cannot remember his children’s names and greet his wife as if he has not seen her in years, even if she’s just left the room.
HM case study- Under surgery to cure his epilepsy and was unable to form new episodic memories but retained disability to learn procedural tasks could not record stroking a dog half an hour ago but didn’t need to have the concept of a dog explained to him and he could walk and speak.
What is the limitations of the different types of long-term memory?
The use of case studies results in a lack of control of variables. In both cases there was also damage to the brain which could’ve changed how it processed. Therefore it weekends the validity of these case studies telling us about the different types of LTM.
