Types of long term memory Flashcards
Memory
Episodic Memory
Memory of personal events and experiences, including what happened, where, and when, along with associated emotions.
Semantic Memory
Memory of facts, knowledge, and general information shared by society, e.g., knowing the capital of a country or mathematical principles.
Procedural Memory
Memory for skills and actions, such as riding a bike or swimming, which are performed automatically once learned.
Episodic Memory Characteristics
Involves time, place, and emotions.
Requires conscious recall (explicit memory).
Contextual and emotional details are key.
Semantic Memory Characteristics
Knowledge is abstract and detached from personal experience.
Sometimes overlaps with episodic memory as episodic memories can transform into semantic ones over time.
Recollection is not tied to time and place.
Procedural Memory Characteristics
Implicit memory (unconscious recall).
Acquired through repetition and practice.
Does not require conscious thought to perform the action.
