types of long term memory Flashcards
1
Q
outline procedural memory
A
- memories for motor (movement) skills and actions
- KNOWING HOW
- non-declaritive = hard to describe
- unconscious
2
Q
outline episodic memory
A
- memories relating to a specific episode or event that happened in your life, have a particular time or place
- KNOWING THAT
- declarative
- conscious
3
Q
outline semantic memory
A
- relates to meaning, no time or place and non-personal
- KNOWING THAT
- declarative
- conscious
4
Q
supporting evidence
A
- Tulving et al = when Ps thought of different kinds of memories, different areas of the brain were active
- HM = could improve procedural memory of tracing a star while looking in reflection, shows that he could form procedural memory, BUT couldn’t remember ever doing it before demonstrating different types of LTM
- Clive Wearing = procedural memory intact but episodic and semantic severely impaired
5
Q
limitations of types of LTM
A
- supporting research is mostly case studies/idiographic and so can’t generalise to wider population - lacks population validity
