Types of Long Term Memory Flashcards
who proposed the three types and LTM and why
Tulving says that the MSM view is too simplistic and inflexible. He said that there are 3 types of LTM stores and they are episodic, semantic and procedural memory
Episodic memory-
Our ability to recall events from our lives (e.g. what you had for breakfast this morning).
These memories are time stamped and a single episode contains several elements. Have to make conscious effort to recall episodic memories (declarative memory)
Semantic memory
Contains knowledge about the world. Includes facts (e.g. what an orange taste likes or what the meaning of a word is). It also contains an impressive number of concepts such as animals. These are not time stamped as we don’t know when we first learned about it.
Semantic is more about knowledge and facts instead of personal things
Procedural memory
Knowledge of how to do things. Includes our memories of learned skills. We can recall these without making a conscious effort (non-declarative memory). If you try to explain to others of how to do these skills you find the task becomes difficult,
