The working memory Model Flashcards
What does the WMM consist of
WMM shows us how the STM is organised and how it functions. It consists of the:
Central executive
Phonological loop
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
Central executive
Attentional process that monitors incoming data, and it makes decisions and allocates the slave systems to task.
limited processing capacity
what are the three slave systems
Phonological loop
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Episodic buffer
Phonological loop
Slave system that deals with auditory info (coding is acoustic) and it preserves the other in which the information arrives
what is the phonological loop subdivided into
Phonological store
Articulatory process
Phonological store
Stores the words you hear
Articulatory process
Allows for maintenance rehearsal so info is kept in the working memory while they are needed.
Capacity of this loop is 2 seconds
Visuo-spatial sketchpad
Second slave system. Stores Visual and spatial info.
Baddeley says that it has a capacity of 3-4 objects.
what is the VSS subdivided into and which psychologist says it
According to Logie:
Visual Cache
Inner scribe
Visual cache
Stores visual data
Inner scribe
records the arrangement of objects in the visual field
Episodic buffer
3rd slave system and added to the model by Baddeley. It is a temporary store for info, integrating the visual, spatial and verbal info processes by other stores and it maintains a sense of time sequencing. Can also be seen as a storage for the Central executive and has limited capacity of about 4 chunks. It also links Working memory to LTM
