types of joints Flashcards
ball-and-socket
this type of joint only exist in the shoulder and hip and is the only multiaxial joints in the body. in these joints one bone (the femur or humerus) has a smooth hemispherical head that fits into a cuplike socket on the other.
condylar (ellipsoid )
joints exhibit an oval convex surface on one bone that fits into a complementary-shaped depression on the other. ex) radiocarpal joint of the wrist and metacarpophalngeal joints at the base of the fingers. they are also biaxial joints, capable of movement in two planes.
saddle
both bones have a saddle-shaped surface-concave in one direction and convex in the other. ex) trapeziometacarpal joint between the trapezium of the wrist and metacarpal 1 at the base of the thumb.
plane
bone surface are flat or slightly concave and convex. the adjacent bones slide over each other and have relatively limited movement. ex) between the carpal bones of the wrist and are usually biaxial.
hinge
joints are usually monaxial and move freely in one plane with very little movement in any other like a door hinge. ex) elbow
pivot
monaxial joints in which a bone spins on its longitudinal axis. ex) the atlantoaxial joint between the first two vertebrae
