fascicles and muscles shapes Flashcards
what do fusiform muscles look like?
thick in the middle and tapered at each end. ex) biceps brachii
what do parallel muscles look like?
have a fairly uniform width and parallel fascicles. some are elongated straps. ex) rectus abdominis of the abdomen. others can be squarish in shape and are called quadrilateral muscle. ex) masseter of the jaw
what do triangular (convergent) muscle slook like?
fan-shaped-broad at one end and narrower at the other. ex) pectoralis major in the chest.
what do pennate muscles look like?
feather-shaped and their fascicles insert obliquely on a tendon that runs the length of the muscle. three types of this muscle which are unipennate (all fascicles approach the tendon from one side), bipennate (fadcicles approach from both sides), and multipennate (shaped like a bunch of feathers).
what do circular muscles (sphincters) look like?
form rings around certain body openings. when they contract, they constrict the opening and tend to prevent the passage of material through it. ex) orbicularis oculi
