motion of joints Flashcards
flexion
a movement that decreases a joint angle, usually in the sagittal plane. an example would be when you flex and bend your elbow
extension
a movement that straightens a joint and generally returns a body part to the zero position
abduction
the movement of a body part in the frontal plane away from the midline of the body
adduction
the movement of a body part in the frontal plane back towards the midline of the body
lateral (external) rotation
is a type of rotation in which a bone spins on its longitudinal axis in the outward direction
medial (internal) rotation
is a type of rotation in which a bone spins on its longitudinal axis in the inward direction
elevation
a movement that raises a body part vertically in the frontal plane
depression
a movement that lowers a body part in the frontal plane
protraction
is the anterior movement of a body part in the transverse (horizontal) plane
circumduction
one end of an appendage remains fairly stationary while the other end makes a circular motion
hyperextension
further extension of a joint beyond the zero position
retraction
is the posterior movement of a body part in the transverse (horizontal) plane
