Types Of Interview/ Questions Flashcards
Define an unstructured interview
There are no set questions, but the interviewer/ researcher may have a list of prompts or topics. The researchers questions follow up on what the interviewee has answered
Give an advantage and disadvantage of an unstructured interview
A- gathers a lot of in-depth and detailed information and may reflect more accurate participants true feelings and thoughts
- can gather qualitative data so results may be richer
- we may discover more information
D-likely to cover a broad range of topics so will be difficult to compare and analyse results of different participants as they may be asked different things
-may be more prone to interviewer bias as they develop questions on the spot
Define semi-structured interview
Some questions are predetermined but the interviewer has the freedom to follow up interesting responses
Give advantages and disadvantages of a semi-structured interview
A- gathers a lot of in-depth and detailed information and may reflect more accurate participants true feelings and thoughts
- can gather qualitative data so results may be richer
- we may discover more information
D-likely to cover a broad range of topics so will be difficult to compare and analyse results of different participants as they may be asked different things
-may be more prone to interviewer bias as they develop questions on the spot
Define structured interview
Uses a predetermined set of questions asked in the same way for each participant
Give an advantage and disadvantage of a structured interview
A- it is easier to repeat with many participants as the questions do not change
-easier to analyse and compare participants results as the questions do not change between participants
D-because it is artificial nature, participants may feel evaluation apprehension and give a socially desirable answers
-harder to follow up interesting answerers as question are restricted
Define open questions
When the participant is able to answer however they please. No set answers to choose from
Give an advantage and disadvantage of open questions
A- collect detailed in-depth answers which produces rich data. Participants are able to give true answers that really reflect how they feel, instead of being restricted
D- data from these questions is harder to analyse, because everyone can say different things and make it difficult to compare
Define closed question
Participants only have set answers to choose from - they may have to tick a certain box or one catagory
Give an advantage and disadvantage of closed questions
A- easy to analyse, as its easy to count up how many participants get each response
- less subjectivity in the way these responses can be interpreted
D- participants are restricted to only giving the answers that are provided which may not reflect how they really feel, so their responses may not be valid
-doesn’t provide any detail about the participants thoughts or feelings, or why the participant is feeling that way
Define likert rating scale
Have a statement that states a feeling/opinion/attitude, then participants have to state to what extent they agree with the statement
Strongly disagree disagree Neutral Agree Strongly agree
Give an advantage and disadvantage of likert scale rating
A- easy to analyse data –> turned into quantitive data
D- based on opinion (subjective)
- leading questions (statement can influence opinion
Define semantic differential rating scale
When the participants have to indicate on a line between two opposite opinions
Very boring ——————————————–very fun
Give an advantage and disadvantage of semantic differential rating scale
A- easy to analyse –> turned into quantitive data
D- based on opinion (more subjective)
