Correlation Flashcards
Define correlation
If there is a link between two variables
Define positive correlation
When one variable increases the other also increases
Define negative correlation
When one variable increase the other decreases
Define no correlation
No relationship between the variables
Give an advantage and disadvantage of correlations
A- useful in new areas of research, when you want to find out if two variables are linked before you design experiments to investigate cause and effects
-easy to analyse visually by drawing a scattergraph-its easy to see if there is a correlation, direction and any outliers
D- can’t tell if one variable causes an effect on the other
-can’t tell which variable causes the other or if a completely separate variable you haven’t measured is influencing your two co-variables
Correlation hypothesis: define null hypothesis
No significant correlation between the variables
Correlation hypothesis: define alternate hypothesis
There will be a significant correlation between the variables
Correlation hypothesis: define one tailed correlation hypothesis
There will be a significant correlation (positive/negative) between the variables
Correlation hypothesis: define two tailed correlation hypothesis
Not stating whether it is a positive or negative correlation between the variables
