Types of Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
Steroid Hormones
A
- composed of lipids (fats)
- pass through target cell membrane which is made of fat
- attached to a receptor in the cell cytoplasm
- the hormone-receptor complex enters the nucleus
- hormone-receptor complex activates a gene
- activated gene controls the reaction needed in the cell-

Q
Protein Hormones
A
-are not fat soluble
-work by a Second Messenger Hypotheses
-protein hormone (1st messenger) binds to receptor on
target cell surface
-hormone-receptor complex activates an enzyme
-enzyme converts ATP to cyclic AMP (cAMP) – the 2nd
messenger
-cAMP triggers a series of desired reactions in the cell
