Endocrine System Flashcards
Endocrine System
Works in parallel with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis by releasing chemical hormones from various glands
Hormones
chemical messengers sent to many parts of the body to produce a specific effect on a target cell or organ
Endocrine Gland
a ductless gland that secrets hormones directly into the bloodstream
Target Cells
-hormones do not seek or excite particular cells/organs
-they travel in bloodstream cells/organs in the body where they may or may not have an affect
cells contain receptors proteins for particular hormones
-these cells are called target cells / target organs
-hormones combine with receptors in lock-and-key fashion
-this binding causes the target cell to respond
Nervous System Vs Endocrine System
electrical control chemical control
made of neurons made of glands
fast acting slow acting
short duration time long duration time
impacts precise local cells impacts many distant cells
SIMILARITIES between the Nervous System & Endocrine System?
both react to stimuli
both systems works to maintain homeostasis by feedback loops
both are systems that send messages (electrical or chemical)
both systems control some body processes ex: pregnancy
ex: some nervous tissue also secretes hormones
ex: some chemicals act as neurotransmitters & hormones
What is the connection between the 2 systems
Hypothalamus Pituitary Gland
The general negative feedback loop to maintain homeostasis…
(a) hypothalamus monitors levels in the body
(b) hypothalamus secretes a releasing hormone to the anterior
pituitary
(c) the anterior pituitary secretes a tropic hormone which
stimulates a target gland
(d) target gland secretes its hormone which impacts a target tissue
