Clinical duties include taking vital signs, taking medical
histories, preparing patients for exams and medical tests, assisting provider with exams, explaining medical procedures to patients, sterilizing medical instruments, assisting in minor surgeries, removing sutures, cleaning and bandaging wounds, calling for prescriptions, explaining patients’ preparation for x-rays, administering immunizations, drawing blood and collecting other
lab specimens, and doing electrocardiograms.
Administrative duties include answering telephones, making appointments, checking patients in and out for examinations, collecting copayment, processing referral documents, and providing patient education.
Certified clinical medical assistant (CCMA)
Licensed health care provider who works interdependently with physicians to diagnose illnesses, conduct physical exams, order and interpret tests, develop treatment plans, and prescribe medications.
Physician assistant (PA)
A partnership between a patient and their care team in which total health is the focus and not just a single condition.
They consist of a provider (physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant), cmaa, ccma, nurses, and pharmacist.
Patient-centered medical home (PCMH)
Provides health management to patients who are sick, injured, or need a routine health exam. They are supervised by providers and RNs
Licensed practical nurse (LPN)
A registered nurse who possesses additional preparation and skills and is supervised by a physician to diagnose illnesses, conduct physical exams, order and interpret tests, develop treatment plans, and prescribe meds.
Nurse practitioner (NP)
A health care professional who has been licensed by the state to provide and coordinate patient care
Registered nurse (RN)
A healthcare specialist who has a concentration or emphasis on a specific are of medicine
Medical specialist
Diagnoses and treat illness, injuries, and disorders. Prescribes medications, makes treatment plans, and answers patients’ questions
Primary care doctor (PCP)
The primary goal of this is to help relieve uncomfortable symptoms in terminally ill patients
Relieving stress and making the patient comfortable are secondary goals.
This can usually be initiated at any stage of the terminal illness
