•power controlled by one person •usually takes power by force •often military leaders rely on armed forces to maintain power •ex: Germany(hitler) Iraq(Hussein)
dictatorship
- most of the power is in the hands of one individual
- power is hereditary
- once most common form of gov, now rare
- ex: Saudi Arabia
monarchy
•power is shared by the people •elected officials •people's opinions are valued •US was the first modern one ex: Great Britain
democracy
democratic country with a monarch with ceremonial duties
constitutional monarchy
- usually limited to a permanent union of sovereign states for common action in relation to other states
- deal with defense, foreign affairs, currency
- ex: early US articles of confederation and the Civil War confederacy (south)
confederal
- government by the few, especially by an elite faction of persons or families
- such states were often controlled by powerful families whose children were raised and mentored to be heirs of the power of the gov
oligarchy
system of gov that divides the gvt’s powers between the national and state gvts
federal system
a system of gov where the executive branch exists and presides separate from the legislature, to which it is not accountable, and which cannot in normal circumstances dismiss it
presidential/congressional system
•system of gov where there is an executive branch of gov which is dependent on the direct and indirect support of the parliament
•the support is given through a vote of confidence
•head of gov- prime minister
•head of state- monarch or elected president
ex: Great Britain
