What is weight?
The force on an object due to gravity.
What is friction?
The force opposing motion which is caused by the interaction of surfaces moving over one another. It is called ‘drag’ if one is a fluid.
What is reaction or normal force?
The contact force opposing gravity on an object that is pressed against a surface (eg. the ground or a table).
What is air resistance?
The contact force on a moving object from the air pushing back on it.
What is magnetism or magnetic force?
The non contact force on a magnetic material from a magnet.
What is static electricity?
The non contact force between two charged objects.
What is upthrust?
The upwards force from a liquid (or sometimes gas) on an object floating on it
What is tension?
The force that is transmitted through a cable, rope, wire or string when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends.
What is lift?
The force acting on a plane wing to move it upwards.
