Types Of Flow Flashcards
Laminar flow described
Where water attempts to avoid friction in its flow.
The stress between the river and it’s bed is at maximum at the bottom and at zero at the top where friction is smallest. The flow velocity will increase with distance from the bed and banks
Turbulent flow ?
Common type of flow. It occurs where the shape of the rivers channel is varied with pool, meanders and Rapids.
Turbulent flow described
When the river tries to flow it’s quickest. It tries to avoid resistance such as large load found in the upper course due to velocity. Causes Eddie currents when water travels around rocks
Sinuosity ratio?
Distance measured between two points along the stream/ straight line distance between two points
Magnitude frequency analysis of a flood risk?
How often a flood of certain significant will occur
Laminar flow?
Rarely occurs, water flows smoothly in a straight channel. It is most common in the lower course of the river where friction is smaller.
