The Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
A local hydrological system is?
Open. It has inputs and outputs
What is a drainage basin ?
An area of land ( catchment area) drained by a river and its tributaries
What are stores?
Where water is held in the system
What are transfers?
Ways water moves around the system. From different sources to eachother
Evaporation?
Where a liquid turns into a gas or vapour
Evapotranspiration?
The sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the earths land and ocean surface to the atmosphere
Interception?
Where water is obstructed by vegetation, buildings etc
Percolation?
Water stored in rocks eventually causing them to break
Surface run-off?
Where water from precipitation flows over land surface
Precipitation ?
Rain, snow, sleet or hail that’s falls to the ground
Groundwater flow
The movement of water that travels and seeps through soil and rock underground
Stem flow
Where the precipitation flows along the stems of plants to the ground
Field capacity
The amount of soil misfire or water content held in the soil after excess water has drained away and the rate of downward movement had decreased
The global hydrological system is ?
Closed. There’s nothing added or taken away
