River Profiles Flashcards
The graded profile
The graded profile is when the long profile smoothness out to balance between deposition and erosion.
Can be described as smooth and concave
River cross profiles
View of the river Bed and banks from one side to the other at any point in its course
Wetted perimeter
The surface area that comes into contact with the water
Bedload
Load that travels on the bed of a river. Boulders, rocks, pebbles
Suspended load
Carried mid flow, sand, clay
Dissolved load
Load that is soluble in the river. Present but cannot be seen, limestone, chalk
Capacity
Amount or total volume of load a river can carry
Competence
The diameter of the largest particle that is carried for a given velocity
The long profile
The long profile shows how a rivers gradient changes as it flows from its source to its mouth
