What is a family?
A group of people related by kinship ties, relations of blood, marriage, civil partnership or adoption. At least two people who are committed to supporting each other practically, emotionally, or economically.
What is a nuclear/cereal packet family?
The ‘traditional’ family consisting of a mother, father and their child living together under one roof.
What is a reconstituted/blended/step family?
A family created by the joining of two adults via marriage, cohabitation or civil partnership, who have children from previous relationships.
What is a co-habiting family?
A family that includes a couple with or without children where the adults are not married to each other, but live together.
What is a single parent family?
A family which consists o one parent and their child.
What is a same-sex family?
A family that includes a couple with or without children where the adults are of the same sex.
What is a patriarchal family?
A family that centres around and serves the needs of the male members of the family and the father holds the power.
What is a matrifocal family?
A family where mothers head families and fathers take a less important role.
What is an extended family?
A family tip that includes parents, grandparents, and children (vertically extended) OR parents, their children, and their siblings.
What is a household?
Consists of either one person who lives alone or a group of un-related people who love at the same address and who share at least one meal or facilities (eg. living room).
