What is co-habitation?
When two people who are romantically involved choose t live together without making the formal commitment of marriage.
How has changing attitudes increased cohabitation?
People in their youth are more likely to cohabit due to changing attitudes. 88% of 18-25s thought cohabiting was okay, only 45% of over 65s (social trends 2014).
How has stigma increased cohabitation?
People are more accepting f sex outside of marriage. In 1989, 44% stated premarital sex was fine, but this has risen to 62% (British social attitudes, 2020).
How has secularisation increased cohabitation?
Young people with no religion are more likely to cohabit that those without religion.
How has career opportunities for women increased cohabitation?
Means women have less need of the financial security that marrying brings.
How has divorce rising increased cohabitation?
Many couples fear the repercussions of divorce and have higher expectations of relationships. As a result, they use cohabitation as a trial period.
How has cost of marriage increased cohabitation?
The average cost of a wedding (2023) was £20,700, whilst house prices are also rising. Many couples are choosing to put the money towards a deposit rather than a marriage.
